Diving in Reunion Island

The Reunion Island is surrounded on all sides by the Indian Ocean. Located 700 km east of Madagascar, it benefits from highly diversified seabeds, whose reliefs have been shaped by recent volcanic activity. In order to protect the coral reef, the marine nature reserve of Reunion Island was created in 2007. This protects it from various activities harmful to its environment. However, nothing prevents you from diving into its turquoise waters to meet its most beautiful marine species. So, what are the best spots for scuba diving in Reunion?

The Port

The waters near the Port are particularly popular among divers. The Tombant site allows diving between 38 and 60 meters. The rocky plateaus form crevices and dizzying irregularities. The fauna there is particularly diverse, and you can see many species of fish, such as bonitos, tunas, schools of jacks, yellowfin tunas, or even sailfish. Likewise, other diving areas near the port are sprinkled with black sand, evidence of the intense volcanic activity of Reunion Island. When the environment becomes more rocky, it turns into a playground suitable for scorpionfish or moray eels. However, given the depth of these areas, the Port is more suitable for experienced divers.

The wreck of the Sea Venture in the bay of Saint-Paul

If you dream of diving into a wreck, the bay of Saint-Paul promises to delight you. However, once again, a level 2 diving certification is required. Indeed, the Sea Venture lies at a depth of 49 meters. There, you will likely be amazed by its two huge propellers, serving as landmarks for a multitude of fish. The hull of this ship, on the other hand, is pierced all over, revealing numerous lobsters, dorados, tunas, and sometimes even a few sharks.

Also note that the bay of Saint-Paul has another wreck, that of a smaller 10-meter-long vessel, resting on a bed of black sand. Less deep, it lies 25 meters below the sea surface. Teeming with life, this site will charm you with its countless fish.

Cap La Houssaye

Not far from Saint-Paul, Cap La Houssaye is the ideal place to start scuba diving. In fact, most diving baptisms take place there. From just 4 meters deep, you will see multiple colorful fish standing out against the blue depths and some rocky crevices. Moreover, a cave is also located in this area. At only 6 meters deep, it leaves an unforgettable memory in the minds of novice divers. Furthermore, while Cap La Houssaye does not require a very advanced level of diving, it is not lacking in terms of fauna. Indeed, it allows you to observe many fish, turtles, lobsters, all kinds of mollusks, and particularly colorful reefs.

The wreck of Hai Siang in Saint-Gilles les Bains

Among the most challenging wrecks to reach in Reunion Island, the Hai Siang is also one of the most breathtaking diving spots. Located at a depth of 54 meters, just off the Cape des Aigrettes, this ship was intentionally sunk in the 1980s. Measuring 50 meters long, it is home to all sorts of fish as well as stingrays. Its imposing structure and metal mask are absolutely fascinating! However, beyond the depth, be aware that the site is subject to strong currents. Therefore, significant experience in scuba diving is essential.

The volcanic flows of Sainte-Rose

Finally, let's leave the west coast for a moment to reach the south of Reunion Island. On the side of Sainte-Rose, experienced divers can explore the underwater volcanic flows.
